2009 APReading German UNL-6/11-6/19 : For the first time since 2005, when the AP Reading was in San Antonio at Trinity University, and the second time overall, David McClave was invited to be an AP German Reader at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln from June 11 to June 19th, 2009. The Reading (actually grading of more than 4400 AP German exams) was completed by 72 AP German teachers and professors of German from around the United States and even from Germany. It is one of the best opportunities for professional development available to teachers and professors in the field of German language and culture. On that subject during the Reading Herr McClave was also at work on a syllabus to be submitted to the College Board as a guide for teachers who will teach AP German Language and Culture, starting in 2012 or 2013, when a new AP Exam will appear. The Reading was ably led by Professor Johanna Watzinger-Tharp, Chief Reader. The University of Nebraska did an outstanding job of hosting the Reading for the last time in this cycle. Next year the Reading moves to Cincinnati, Ohio.

In Memoriam John Sliskovich, class of '02 : This is a gallery dedicated to the memory, contributions and achievements of John Peter Sliskovich, an outstanding member of the German program and German Club at Loyola High School from 1998 to 2002. John was a stellar representative of his family, school, city and country on the 2000 Exchange Program, linking Loyola with its partner school in Hamburg, Germany, the Sankt-Ansgar Schule. John went on to study at the University of Kansas and Chapman University, where he was to graduate in May 2009. Most of these images are of his participation in the exchange program in Germany in June and July of 2000. John was and will remain one of Loyola's SpitzenCubs.

LHS Urban Plunge May 1-3, 2009 : Brought to Loyola High School about five years ago by Director of Community Service, Mr. Tom Zeko, an urban plunge is an intensive field trip of three- or two-day duration to Los Angeles' skid row, the largest concentration of homeless in the United States. Normally, a group of about 12 to 16 students, accompanied by two or three adults (faculty, staff or administrators), make the plunge. There have been about thirty such field trips so far. Every four to six weeks a group departs from Loyola on a Friday, travels by public transportation to skid row, an area of about ten square blocks in the shadows of the skyscrapers of downtown, and spends two nights at a shelter or at a parish that is a sanctuary for undocumented immigrants. The group works at one of the three missions that give their all to care for the homeless---the Midnight Mission, Union Rescue Mission or the Los Angeles Mission. The group also gets a tour of the area led by a police officer. They sometimes visit other agencies in the city, in Hollywood for example, which has a high concentration of young homeless or Homeboy Industries, the company founded by Loyola alum, Fr Greg Boyle, S.J., to assist gang members find the straight and narrow path and stay on it. Sometimes the group has Loyola vans and goes out to distribute food directly to the homeless who shy away from the missions and shelters. Most who participate count the experience as one of the most memorable in their young, middle-aged or senior lives. Bottom line--the homeless in Los Angeles are far from forgotten. But Loyola believes the young people, especially those of privilege, need to have their consciousness raised on this issue. On this particular Plunge there were twelve students (one senior leader, one junior, and ten sophomores) and two faculty leaders. The group left on Friday, May 1st, after school and returned to campus late morning on Sunday. The images provide a look at this unique service opportunity.

Austausch08/Exchange2008 : Here are the photos and visual stories of the ninth exchange program with Sankt-Ansgar Schule in HH, the first round of which took place from June 24th to July 16th in the beautiful port city of Hamburg. Many of the activities in those days are photo-documented here: school days at Sankt-Ansgar Schule, bike tour of Lueneburg district, excursion to Berlin (7/3-7/6/08), canoe trip on Alster and other waterways, "scavenger hunt" (ralleye) in downtown Hamburg, mudflat hike to offshore island of Neuwerk, visit to zoo, to name a few activities. Images of others who have assisted this invaluable program since its inception in 1990 are also on these pages. Here pride of place goes to Mr. Thomas Driver, who headed seven exchange programs before his retirement from teaching at SAS in 2007. Following in his footsteps are Frau Catharina Haarmeyer Soria Vega and Herr Andreas Goletz-de Ruffray. Making up the 2008 LHS team were Jack Allman, Hugh Augustine, Ryan Cashen, Hunter Chandler, Alex Clark, Charles Fisher, John Gunderman, Viktor Greve, John Platt, Martin Reising, Erik Stahlheber, John Toy, and Jered Villacorte. The German group visited Loyola HS and stayed with their host families beginning September 27th and ending on October 18th. Hat sehr viel Spass gemacht, Jungs, nicht wahr?!
